Wassell Atchley Turner

Wassell Atchley Turner, age 74, of Little Rock, died Friday, September 7, 2007. Wassell was born in Little Rock where he graduated from Little Rock Central High School. He attended Little Rock Junior college before joining the U.S. Navy serving from 1951 through 1953. After his service time he attending the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville where he received his B.A. and Bachelor of Architecture degrees. He married Diane Trust Turner in 1958 in Shreveport, Louisiana. They returned to Little Rock where Wassell began his architectural career at the firm of Wittenberg, Deloney and Davidson and Bruce Anderson Architects. After several years he became a partner in the firm of Compton Turner Architects, later Compton, Turner, and Dyer Architects. This firm designed the Arkansas Folk Center in Mountain View. He most recently devoted his time in the home remodeling business. Wassell was a life long member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral where he served a Junior and Senior Warden several times. He was on the Spinal Cord Commission, once president of the Little Rock Racquet Club, one of the founders of the Maumelle Sailing Club, and a member of the board of the MacArthur Military Museum. He loved traveling and the outdoors.

Wassell is survived by his wife Diane Trust Turner of Little Rock, two sons; Alan Turner, and David Turner and his wife April, and one grandchild, Hailey Turner all of Little Rock.

There will be a memorial funeral service on Monday, September 10th, at 11AM, at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral officiated by The Very Reverend Henry Hudson. There will be a reception following services at Morrison Hall. Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com.

"One year ago this week right before he passed away, my father, Kent Vestal, told me to only call his two oldest friends upon his passing - Wassell Turner and Jim Porter. On several occasions since I made that call, Wassell has shared stories with me about he and my father growing up together at Trinity. I will miss Wassell and the connection with my father. However, I know they are once again having fun and laughs together in heaven."

"I was very sorry to read of the death of Wassell Turner. Although I have not lived in Little Rock for 59 years, I remember Wassell from childhood, and more recently at LRHS reunions and the 'annual fish fry' at Scott, Arkansas.

Many years ago, I discussed with Wassell the 1944 movie entitled, 'The Story of Dr. Wassell', which starred Gary Cooper and Larraine Day. Dr. Corydon Wassell was related to Wassell Turner, but I cannot now recall the connection. Dr. Wassell escaped the Japanese invasion of the East Indies in World War II.

In any case, Wassell Turner was a well-respected individual throughout his entire life and it was a pleasure to know him. My condolences to his family. "
