Biography: Dorothy Elizabeth Dortch Kapnic, age 71, passed away at her home in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, August 7, 2016. She was born on March 23, 1945, to George L. Dortch and Helen P. Dortch of Scott, Arkansas. She is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her sister, Georgia Dortch Sowers, of Little Rock, her two nephews, Bill Sowers (Jodie) and John Sowers (Kari), and six great-nieces and great-nephews, Addison, Zac, Alyssa, Rosie, Dassi, and Juliet. Dorothy grew up on a farm near Scott, Arkansas. She graduated from North Little Rock High School and earned a B.A. and M.A. in mathematics from the University of Arkansas. After teaching for a few years, she began working in the computer field as a programmer analyst for AT&T in Kansas City and then for Sunoco in Tulsa and Philadelphia. She continued in systems audit and support at Pennsylvania Blue Cross Blue Shield and United Concordia until she retired. She lived in Harrisburg for the last twelve years, where she was an active and faithful member of St. Andrew?s in the Valley Episcopal Church. She was involved in the ministry of the church in many ways, from serving on committees to volunteering wherever she could contribute. Dorothy felt strongly about encouraging women to work in the STEM field and for this reason established an award at the University of Arkansas Department of Mathematical Sciences. Memorials may be made to the Dorothy Dortch Kapnic Endowed Award in Mathematical Sciences at the University of Arkansas or to a charity of your choice. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com

I just learned of Dorothy's death. We were roommates at the University of Arkansas for two semesters in 1963. Were those college years really so long ago? We had some good times.
