Biography: Donald Blair Hatfield of Little Rock, Arkansas died at home on March 19, 2017 after a life filled with love, luck, and joy. Born in Ft. Smith, Arkansas, July 20, 1941, to Homer Don (H.D.) and Miriam (Bartleson) Hatfield, Don graduated from Ft. Smith High School in 1959 and Arkansas Tech in 1963. After college he served in the Army in Europe and then in Vietnam, and was awarded a Bronze Star. He had a long and rewarding career in Information Technology (which he always assured everyone was a result of luck and fortunate timing, and not of any technical skill), started to retire in 1995 and finally succeeded after three attempts in about 2010, after having done business in ?between 40 and 50? countries. Don served for almost 20 years as Advisory Board Chair for Youth Opportunities Unlimited, a program giving at-risk Arkansas youth a boost in academic achievement and a much-increased opportunity for high school graduation and college attendance. He was a Charter Member and past President of the Arkansas Academy of Computing, which has played an active role in enhancing computing education in the state and has funded hundreds of college scholarships in the field. He was an active Advisory Board member for the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS)?s Psychiatric Research Institute (PRI), and for the College of Engineering and Information Technology at UALR. He is survived by his beloved wife Marilyn (nee Weiser), with whom he shared romance and adventures on six continents (sorry, Antarctica) and an enduring love; a son, Andrew, and two granddaughters, Ellaina and Blair, all of Conway; two sisters, Vicky Kiehl (Bill) of Russellville and Robin Rylander (Nick) of Tulsa; a nephew Bill Kiehl (Holly) of Erie, CO and their three children; and many, many friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by a son, Peter (Pete) Aaron Clay Hatfield. The family has many people to thank, but first among them is the phenomenal staff at UAMS. Wonderful is far too weak a word. Thank you? Memorials: A message to Don?s friends ? Don has asked that no memorial services be held. Instead, he is asking us to dig a little deeper than usual and help him do some good on his way out. Before his death, Don began work on an endowment initiative at the Psychiatric Research Institute of UAMS with a particular focus on helping veterans and their families. You can help bring this effort to fruition by making a contribution in his memory. Please send your contributions to UAMS Foundation, 4301 W. Markham St., #716, Little Rock, AR 72205 or www.giving.uams.edu/give. Also include the notation ?In Memory of Donald B. Hatfield.? From Marilyn, part of a verse from the Scottish poet Robert Burns: ?Few hearts like his, with virtue warm'd; Few heads with knowledge so inform'd; If there's another world, he lives in bliss; If there is none, he made the best of this.?

Don was a wonderful and kind human being, and I treasured my time working with him at Systematics. I saw him as a mentor and friend who helped a California boy feel right at home in Arkansas. I loved his laugh and his sense of humor. While I haven't seen Don in decades, I am so pleased to honor his life, character and integrity.

Reflecting back upon my 30+ years of Hat....as a business colleague, friend, philanthropist, volunteer, Arkansas ambassador and occasional golfing partner.....we'll all miss a very special man who was wise, humorous, kind to others, and could bring levity in the face of crisis when it was needed most. Thanks to Marilyn whose partnership made him even better and VERY happy. Barbara and I send our deepest love to her and the family.

You don't meet many people like Don; brilliant, loyal, honest, funny, indefatigable and a list of other positive adjectives too numerous to list here. I learned so much from him at Systematics about information technology, caring for customers and good management. For all of you that knew him, you know what I mean. We need more people like him, particularly now. My condolences to the family. This is a great loss to all of us.

To the most honorable, decent, generous, caring, and loving man I've had the pleasure of knowing and calling brother. Rest in Peace Don. You are forever loved and will always be a part of the crazy Weiser clan. And to you my beautiful sister Marilyn, I love you.

Gramps, you were an amazing grandfather, and one I was truly blessed to know in my life. You went above and beyond to make sure we all were set for life and understood it's meaning and how to be successful. You never failed to have faith in us even when we were stuck and felt there was no way out. I will continue to think of you daily. I love you, thank you for everything.

Marilyn, Andy, Ellaina, Blair, and family, thank you for sharing "Uncle Duck" with us. He made our world a better place and will be greatly missed. A better mentor to "Dr.Duck" could not have been found had we searched the world over. Sending our love...

Sending so much love to Marilyn and family. I had only known Don for a short time but during that time not only did he make me laugh, he shared some great stories, and always made me feel so welcomed. I will never forget our trip to Little Rock and will remember him every time I introduce Faye as "Esma."

To everyone, but especially Marilyn and Talented Pianist Sister Vicky: We were friends at Tech more than fifty years ago. We have a fine memory of Don in a Russellville apartment after his military duty, hand-drawing spreadsheets and envisioning computerized flow charts. He drove a Porsche when he visited while we lived in Washington, and then we frequently saw each other when he lived here in Florida. And Arkansas, too, but not as much as we now wish. We didn't know he was sick and shall surely miss him. He did a lot of good for the world.

Don was a special "good guy" among the many good guys and gals at Systematics. We worked closely together for a number of years and I knew him to be an excellent business executive with impeccable integrity. In fact he epitomized those combined characteristics better than anyone I have ever known. I am privileged to have worked with him and to have had him as a friend. Marilyn, my sincere condolences to you and all of Don's family. I know that you will miss him yet treasure his memory.

Marilyn and family. Our thoughts and prayers for
all of you. My contact with "Hat" began in 1988 when
I came to Systematics. The things I always admired most about him were his great sense of humor and the fact that he always gave me straight answers on business issues. He was a highly valued member of the Systmatics management and family and will be greatly missed by all. God Bless.

Bless you, Don, and deepest sympathies to Marilyn and your family. We had the pleasure of meeting Don only a few times in Pennsylvania but truly enjoyed his wealth of knowledge, resounding humor, quick one-liners, and obvious love of Marilyn. You certainly enriched our lives.

And, too bad Antarctica. It was your loss that Don didn't have time to visit.

Marilyn,

I met Hat as a 26 year lad (as he always called me). He was a mentor whom I respected and tried to emulate.

Those who knew Hat would understand the following story - he and I were calling on a client and it started raining. He looked at me and said, "I hold you responsible for the rain. You should have checked the weather". I'll miss his sardonic disposition.

I am honored to say he was my friend.
